British School Portrait of a Young Gentleman with Book

A characterful early 19th-century British School portrait of a young gentleman, painted in oil on board and presented in a large ornate gilt frame. The sitter is shown half-length against a dark brown background, wearing a high-collared black coat, white collar, dark cravat and warm brown waistcoat, holding an open book in one hand.

The clothing and style suggest a date around the late Regency or early William IV period, c.1820–1830. The book gives the portrait a particularly appealing scholarly quality, presenting the sitter as thoughtful, educated and self-possessed. Although apparently unsigned, the work has strong decorative presence, with a sensitively painted face and direct, quietly engaging expression.

The portrait is housed in a substantial decorative gilt frame with bold moulded ornament, giving the piece excellent wall presence.
