Description
Claude Hamilton Rowbotham (British 1864–1949) – Hand-Coloured Aquatint Lake of Menteith (In Golden Haze) Signed
A beautifully atmospheric hand-coloured aquatint by British etcher Claude Hamilton Rowbotham (1864–1949), depicting the tranquil expanse of the Lake of Menteith in soft golden light. Rowbotham was celebrated for his coloured aquatints of British and European landscapes, and this example shows his sensitive handling of tone, mood, and distance, with subtle washes of colour enhancing the etched detail beneath.
The Lake of Menteith, situated in the heart of the Trossachs, has long inspired artists for its serene water, wooded shores, and evocative weather. Rowbotham pioneered an original aquatinting technique that is on show in this particular piece. This impression, an artist’s proof from an edition of 100, captures the lake in a warm, hazy glow, with finely engraved lines softened by careful hand-colouring, typical of the artist’s most sought-after work.
Rowbotham’s aquatints were issued in small editions and individually coloured, making each example slightly unique. This impression is pencil signed in the lower margin and retains excellent colour quality. The print is presented in a vintage glazed frame with a descriptive label verso, adding to its period character and collectability.
With its gentle palette, well-balanced composition, and Scottish subject matter, this is a highly decorative and appealing print suited to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
