Wolstenholme came from a noted family of English sporting painters and is best known for hunting, equestrian, coaching and country sporting subjects. This atmospheric example captures the movement and drama of the chase, with the white horse and rider standing out against the darker wooded landscape, while the hounds run ahead across the foreground. The dramatic sky and rich, earthy palette give the painting a strong decorative presence.

The painting has been given a light clean, which has lifted some surface dirt, though it retains a dark overall tone.
