Description
Iain L. Campbell (Scottish, mid-20th century) – Oil Painting, Ben Wyvis from Above Evanton
Original oil on board by the Scottish artist Iain L. Campbell, depicting Ben Wyvis, one of Scotland’s most prominent Munros, viewed from above Evanton in Easter Ross. The mountain rises in a broad, domed mass above the surrounding lowlands, its distinctive rolling summit and expansive slopes rendered with confident, expressive brushwork and a restrained, atmospheric palette typical of post-war Scottish landscape painting.
Ben Wyvis is a well-known and much-loved Munro, standing prominently north of Inverness and commanding wide views across the Cromarty Firth and the Highlands beyond. Unlike the jagged peaks of the west, Ben Wyvis is characterised by its smooth, sweeping form and sense of quiet grandeur, qualities that are effectively captured here through subtle tonal shifts and an emphasis on light, sky, and open space. The painting conveys the calm, elemental presence of the Highland landscape rather than topographical detail.
The work is signed and dated 1954 to the lower left. On the reverse is a paper label and a Post-it note which appears to read:
“BEN WYVIS from
above Evanton
by Ian Campbell
‘The Art’. A friend
of Mum and Dad who
used to visit LG.”
The painting is presented in a complementary wooden frame and is ready to hang. A well-balanced composition of good scale, it would suit both traditional and contemporary interiors, particularly for collectors or admirers of Scottish Highland landscapes.
