Irene Halliday RSW – Plockton Evening, Gouache

Original gouache by the Scottish artist Irene Halliday RSW, titled Plockton Evening, depicting the harbour village of Plockton set beside calm water and dark Highland hills. The composition has a strong evening atmosphere, with deep blues and greens used throughout the sky, loch and landscape, while small touches of light in the cottages and harbour give the scene warmth and depth.

The named subject gives the work added Scottish interest. Plockton, on the west coast of Scotland, is known for its sheltered waters, whitewashed cottages and dramatic surrounding hills, all of which are captured here in Halliday’s compact and atmospheric style. The work has a jewel-like quality typical of gouache, with the rich colour and simplified forms giving the scene a quiet, decorative strength.

Halliday was known for her Scottish landscapes, coastal subjects and expressive use of colour. This work is signed lower right and retains its original Torrance Gallery label verso, giving the title, medium, original price of £250, and exhibition date of August 1992. A charming and atmospheric Scottish gouache, well suited to collectors of modern Scottish art and Highland coastal views.
