Mary Armour RSA RSW – Auchenhean, Lochwinnoch

Original pastel on paper by Mary Armour RSA RSW (Scottish, 1902–2000), depicting Auchenhean near Lochwinnoch in Renfrewshire. Signed and dated ’62 lower right, with a handwritten label verso giving the artist, title, address, and medium.

The work is a lively and atmospheric Scottish landscape, handled with Armour’s characteristic confidence in colour and mark-making. Trees, cottages, paths, and patches of autumnal light are built up in broad, energetic pastel strokes, giving the scene a strong sense of immediacy. Rather than a tightly descriptive view, the composition feels observed quickly and directly, with the dark trunks and blue-grey roofs set against warm yellows, greens, and ochres.

Mary Armour was an important Scottish painter and teacher, associated with Glasgow School of Art and elected to the RSA and RSW. Although especially admired for her still lifes and flower paintings, this landscape shows the same boldness of colour and expressive handling that characterise her wider work.

Presented in a glazed frame. The work appears to have been reframed in 2024 by Framework Picture Framers, Newhaven, as indicated by the framer’s label verso. The older handwritten label has been retained and pasted onto the new backing board, apparently having been cut from the backing board of the previous frame.
