Description
George Melvin Rennie (Scottish, 1874–1953) – Old Brig o’ Dee
Original oil on board by the Scottish artist George Melvin Rennie, depicting the Old Brig o’ Dee crossing the River Dee near Invercauld. The composition captures the bridge within a tranquil Highland landscape, with the river, trees and distant hills rendered in a restrained, atmospheric palette. Rennie’s confident handling and loose, expressive brushwork give the work both structure and softness, reflecting the late Impressionist influence often seen in his landscapes.
The Old Brig o’ Dee is an especially appealing subject, combining scenic beauty with historical resonance. Built in 1752 as part of Major William Caulfeild’s programme of Highland military roads and bridges following the Jacobite rising of 1745, it remains one of the most notable surviving bridges of its kind. Rennie returned to this motif more than once, and other closely related versions are known, suggesting that it held a lasting importance within his work.
This example has a particularly balanced and pleasing composition, with the arch of the bridge drawing the eye across the water and into the surrounding landscape. Modest in scale but rich in atmosphere, it is a characterful Scottish painting that would sit well in both traditional and more contemporary interiors.
Signed and presented in a later frame, ready to hang. Although an exact date is unknown, the style, materials and subject suggest a work of the early to mid-20th century, likely dating to the 1920s or 1930s.
