Scottish Highland Officer Portrait Oil Painting c.1830 Cameron Highlanders

Original oil on board depicting a Highland officer in traditional regimental dress, painted by a Scottish artist during the early–mid nineteenth century. The sitter is shown wearing double gold epaulettes and a tartan sash secured with a circular brooch, identifying him as a commissioned officer of a Highland regiment, most likely the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders. His calm, assured expression and composed posture convey the discipline, pride, and identity associated with Highland military service during this period.

The tartan sash, rendered with a green ground and bold red checks with fine yellow lines, closely resembles that worn by the Cameron Highlanders, one of Scotland’s most distinguished regiments. The artist’s careful handling of light and tone, particularly in the face and metallic fastening, creates a convincing and lifelike presence. Subtle highlights applied with metallic impasto allow the brooch to catch the light, adding a refined and realistic detail that enhances the portrait’s character.

The painting is executed on an artist’s board supplied by Alexander Hill, colourman to the Scottish Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, whose business operated at 67 Princes Street, Edinburgh between 1828 and 1866. This label confirms the painting’s Scottish origin and firmly places it within Edinburgh’s thriving nineteenth-century artistic community.

When acquired, the painting’s surface was obscured by aged varnish and nicotine staining. Careful professional cleaning has since revealed the original richness of colour and detail, restoring the clarity and presence intended by the artist.

Presented in a period frame bearing a worn framers label referencing 22 South Street, Perth, further reinforcing its Scottish provenance. A fine and characterful portrait of modest scale, suitable for collectors of Scottish art, military history, or Highland regimental material.

Although the sitter’s identity is currently unknown, the portrait preserves a strong sense of personal and historical presence, offering a compelling connection to Scotland’s military heritage.
