A fine early 20th-century hand-coloured mezzotint engraving by Thomas Hamilton Crawford (1860–1948), after the celebrated French painter Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier (1815–1891). Titled The Sign Painter, the composition depicts a tradesman carefully lettering a shop sign while a second figure looks on, capturing a characterful moment of everyday working life with wit, warmth, and close observation.

The subject is especially appealing for its sense of concentration and quiet humour. Meissonier’s small-scale genre scenes were admired for their precision and intimacy, and Crawford’s mezzotint translates those qualities into a richly tonal print with a soft, velvety surface.
