Walter Linsley Meegan – Nocturne Harbour Scene with Fishing Boats

Walter Linsley Meegan (1859–1944) was a British painter known for marine and coastal subjects, and this atmospheric nocturne is a fine example of that enduring appeal. Fishing boats gather quietly in harbour beneath a darkening sky, their forms emerging through a restrained palette and softly handled evening light. The composition has a particularly intimate character, with the small scale and subdued tonal range giving the scene a calm, reflective mood.

The picture’s strength lies in its atmosphere. Meegan uses silhouette, reflection, and low light to create a harbour scene that feels both decorative and evocative, making it well suited to interiors where a smaller, more characterful oil painting is wanted. Signed lower right, it is presented in a simple frame and is ready to hang.

This work is offered in aged condition and priced accordingly. There is visible paint loss and abrasion, most notably across the hull of the principal boat where the ground layer is showing through. The canvas also shows distortion and crease damage, particularly at lower left, together with further age-related surface wear. Please refer closely to the photographs for the exact condition.
