Description
William Drummond Bone R.S.W. A.R.S.A. – Corrag Buidhe, Scottish Highland Oil Painting
Original oil on board by the Scottish artist William Drummond Bone RSW ARSA, depicting a dramatic Highland loch landscape beneath brooding hills and heavy cloud. The composition is painted with vigorous, expressive brushwork, using deep greens, browns, greys and muted silvery tones to create a strong sense of weather, distance and atmosphere.
The title, Corrag Buidhe, appears to refer to the Corrag Buidhe / Corrag Bhuidhe area associated with An Teallach in Wester Ross, one of Scotland’s most dramatic mountain landscapes. Rather than presenting the scene in crisp topographical detail, Bone captures the feeling of the place: dark slopes, shifting light, rough Highland weather and the pale sweep of water held between the hills.
Bone studied at Glasgow School of Art and later joined its staff, eventually becoming a senior lecturer. He was the nephew of Sir Muirhead Bone and painted landscapes, seascapes and figure subjects in both oil and watercolour. This work is a strong example of his expressive Scottish landscape painting, with a particularly atmospheric treatment of the Highland setting.
The painting is signed lower right and is framed, with artist and title labels verso. A powerful mid-20th-century Scottish landscape, well suited to collectors of Highland views, Glasgow School artists and expressive modern Scottish painting.
