Christine H. Jackson (English, active 1930s) – Southease, Sussex No. 1, Signed Watercolour, Framed

An original signed watercolour by Christine H. Jackson, depicting Southease in Sussex as a charming interwar village scene with cottages, church, trees, and grazing sheep set within a gently rolling landscape. The composition has a distinctive decorative and illustrative quality, with carefully arranged forms, soft colour harmonies, and fine linear detail combining to give the work considerable period charm.

Jackson’s treatment of the subject is especially appealing. The clustered buildings, church tower, and surrounding trees are handled in a stylised yet recognisable manner, giving the piece the character of both a topographical view and an illustrator’s interpretation of place. The result is a work that feels warm, characterful, and quietly atmospheric, with a strong sense of English rural identity.

The artist is described on the accompanying label as an English artist active in the 1930s, known as an illustrator of children’s books and for producing posters and press advertisements for London Transport. The same label notes that she exhibited at the Royal Academy three times between 1930 and 1938, and that examples of her work are represented in the London Transport Museum. These details add helpful context and make the present work particularly interesting as an example of a period artist working across both illustration and exhibition practice.

The reverse also retains the artist’s original handwritten label, giving the title “Southease” Sussex No. 1 together with her address at 42A Beeches Avenue, Carshalton Beeches, Surrey. Surviving labels of this kind give the work a strong sense of authenticity and help place it within the artist’s working life.

Presented behind glass in a simple wooden frame with a wide off-white mount, this is a pleasing and decorative original watercolour that would suit collectors of British interwar art, Sussex views, illustrative landscape subjects, and small original works on paper.
