Description
Portrait of R. J. Brooks – Antique Oil Painting on Canvas, English School
A characterful mid-19th century portrait depicting R. J. Brooks in formal black coat and white cravat, painted in a restrained palette that gives the work a strong period presence. The sitter is shown bust-length against a simple ground, with the directness of the composition and the dark tonal handling lending the painting a quiet dignity typical of Victorian portraiture.
The reverse bears the name of the sitter together with a birth date of 1822, while “T. Yule, Haddington” also appears in a different hand, suggesting a later ownership inscription. These markings add an appealing layer of historical interest and help anchor the picture as an individual rather than an anonymous decorative portrait.
Recently professionally cleaned, the painting remains visually striking and displays well. As one would expect with a work of this age, there is craquelure and age-related surface wear, most notably to the darker passages of the coat, where pronounced alligator-like cracking is visible. There are also small retouched areas, but the portrait retains strong decorative appeal and an authentic antique character.
Presented in a dark stained wooden frame with a dark gilt inner slip, this is a genuine 19th century oil portrait with both decorative charm and personal historical interest.
