Joel M. Roman – Living Room Coffee Table, 1978, Gouache

Original gouache by American artist Joel M. Roman, depicting a brightly coloured living-room interior centred around a glass coffee table. The table is filled with decorative objects, flowers, fruit, blue-and-white ceramics and reflective glassware, set against a vivid blue sofa and a bold geometric rug. The composition has a strong sense of colour and pattern, with the domestic still life arranged almost like an interior-design vignette.

Roman’s background in both painting and interior design gives this work particular appeal. Rather than a simple still life, the scene brings together many of the subjects associated with his work: colour, architecture, interiors, horticulture and personal objects. The result is a richly decorative 1970s interior study, full of saturated blues, oranges, reds and greens, with a lively modernist feel.

The work is signed and dated 1978 lower left and is presented in a glazed frame with a wide textile mount. A stylish and highly decorative American gouache, well suited to an interior scheme and especially appealing for collectors of 1970s design, still life and domestic interiors.

Condition: The painting appears in good overall vintage condition. There are some age-related marks and light discolouration to the mount, along with general surface wear, rubbing and small knocks to the frame. The backing paper has torn in places.
