Description
Large Oil on Board Portrait Study by M. Miller – Signed Mid-Century Figurative Painting
An original oil on board portrait study by M. Miller, a mid-20th-century artist, depicting a sensitively observed female sitter. The composition is rendered with confident, expressive brushwork and a restrained, atmospheric palette, characteristic of post-war figurative painting and studio portraiture of the period.
The portrait demonstrates strong technical handling and careful tonal balance, with particular attention given to the sitter’s expression and modelling of form. The artist’s painterly approach and considered use of colour create a quiet, intimate presence, making this an appealing and characterful example of mid-century portraiture.
Although biographical information on M. Miller remains limited, the style, materials, and handling are consistent with works produced during the 1960s–1970s, reflecting broader trends in post-war figurative art that balanced traditional draftsmanship with freer, more expressive surface treatment.
The painting is signed in paint to the lower right and is presented in a decorative gilt frame of likely earlier date than the artwork itself. The piece is glazed and ready to hang, making it suitable for immediate display in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
The work is in good overall vintage condition. Under ultraviolet light, a faint splash-like staining pattern, possibly relating to varnish with minor drip marks, is visible in places. This is barely perceptible under normal viewing conditions and does not detract from the overall presentation. The frame shows light, age-related wear consistent with its age.
A well-executed and attractive mid-century portrait, ideal for collectors of figurative art, vintage interiors, and traditional portrait painting.
