Scottish School (20th Century) - Resting in the Shade

An atmospheric 20th-century Scottish School oil on board depicting three figures resting beneath a pair of substantial trees in an expansive rural landscape. The painting is unsigned, but retains an intriguing handwritten label to the reverse inscribed “Drummond”, together with a separate circled “N” or inventory mark, potentially preserving an earlier attribution or association with the work.

The composition is dominated by the two great trees rising from the left-hand side, their dense dark foliage spreading across much of the upper picture and casting a broad pool of shadow beneath. Three small figures have gathered at their base, their light and dark clothing picked out with economical touches of paint. Beyond them the landscape opens dramatically into sunlit fields, a distant line of trees and a long range of blue-grey hills beneath a pale summer sky.

Much of the painting's appeal lies in this contrast between the cool, heavily shaded foreground and the open countryside beyond. The substantial trees provide both the compositional anchor and the narrative of the picture, giving the figures a natural place of refuge from the heat of the surrounding landscape. Their small scale also heightens the impression of space, allowing the eye to travel from the shaded foreground across the fields towards the distant hills.

The handling is loose and assured, particularly through the foliage, where dark browns, olive greens and touches of grey are rapidly worked together to suggest the movement and density of the leaves. The surrounding fields are treated more broadly in subdued ochres and earthy greens, while the distant hills introduce a cooler blue note that separates them clearly from the warmer foreground.

The handwritten “Drummond” label is of particular interest. Among Scottish painters of the period, William Drummond Bone (1907–1979) provides one possible line of research: an Ayr-born painter associated with Glasgow School of Art who worked extensively in oil and watercolour and was particularly known for landscapes of open farmland, moorland and the hills of western Scotland. No firm attribution can presently be made, however, and the painting is therefore offered conservatively as Scottish School.

Presented in an impressive broad gilt period frame richly decorated with moulded foliate and repeating ornament, with traces of red bole visible beneath the gilded surface. The substantial frame complements the muted natural palette particularly well and gives the relatively intimate painting considerable presence.
