A charming 20th-century Scottish School oil on board depicting two children playing beside rockpools on a rocky coastline. The scene is full of coastal atmosphere, with red-brown cliffs and boulders framing a sheltered pool, while the darker blue water and distant green hills open the composition out towards the horizon.

The painting is unsigned, but it is confidently and attractively handled, with broad, expressive brushwork used to build up the rocks, shoreline and vegetation. The small figures in the foreground give the work a particularly appealing narrative quality, suggesting children rockpooling or playing at the water’s edge.

The coastal setting may possibly relate to the East Lothian/North Berwick area, with its distinctive red rock formations and views across the Firth of Forth, though the exact location remains unidentified. The reverse retains an old label for Doig, Wilson & Wheatley, fine art dealers, printsellers, picture restorers and framers of George Street, Edinburgh, adding further Scottish interest to the piece.

Condition: The painting presents well overall. There are small black specks on the painted surface, likely flecks of dirt, most noticeable in the sky sections, along with minor age-related surface marks. The gilt frame has some wear, rubbing and small losses consistent with age. The board is not sitting completely flush with the frame at the top, though it remains very secure. The work appears to have been framed using cork spacers, an interesting period framing detail visible from the reverse.
